“And this was life! Blind labor!... Why?”

Who has not had reason to say these words and to desperately hope that something in their life would change? Cain, too, asks himself this question and cannot understand why those close to him willingly and gratefully accept a monotonous existence. But Cain unexpectedly receives a chance (or perhaps not) to meet Lucifer, and everything around him is swept into sudden transformation. Lucifer takes Cain on a dizzying journey and cracks open the gates of knowledge. He shows him the infinity and grandeur of the universe. He reveals the recurring cycles of time. They reach the secrets of the “mysterious death.” But is it enough to know in order to be able to accept? Are the answers Lucifer gives sufficient for Cain and for his descendants—that is, for US ALL?

The Bulgarian theatre director Desislava Boeva repeatedly returns to Lord Byron’s text at different stages of her artistic career. This is her third encounter with the text, built upon the opposition between everyday life and the rules of the collective on the one hand, and individual dissatisfaction and the crossing “beyond” on the other. The performance explores the tragic clash between an incommunicable individual revelation and rediscovery of the world, and the closed, rigid framework of tradition and law. As in her other productions, the director remains faithful to her interest in combining in-depth work on the meaning embedded in the text with expressive movement scores that deconstruct fragments of various dance traditions. This is the first production in which the team incorporates cinematic elements into its work. The performance is produced by AMI DA, the director’s independent production company, through which she and her team realize their independent projects.
