Theatre Ģertrūdes ielas teātris will close out the season with a new performance by Jana Jacuka “The Distance Between Us”. Premiere date: May 30th, next performance – May 31st.
In her piece “The Distance Between Us” choreographer Jana Jacuka focuses on the fragility of relationships and on the euphoria and co-dependency created by feelings. Text, alongside movement, has played an important role in her previous works, but this time the body is the main medium. A carousel of emotions weaves throughout the performance, as two people seek closeness and then withdraw once again.
In her work Jana Jacuka tackles themes and questions that directly affect her. She is the author of “Everything Will Be Fine” and “Routine of Fear” as well as the co-author of the exhibition and digital collection “Physical Evidence Museum” which delves into the uncomfortable subject of domestic violence. The production “The Routine of Fear” was nominated for the Latvian Dance Award 2020/2021 and will be representing Latvia in this years Baltic Dance Platform in Tallinn. Jana also collaborates as choreographer with director Viesturs Kairišs (productions “Smiļģis” at Daile Theatre, “Mumu” at Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre, “Baltic Ring” at Latvian National Theatre, and others), and she has worked as a performer in ĢIT and “KatlZ” productions “A Situational Comedy” (director Vsevolod Lisovsky, Russia) and “Cannon Fodder” (director Dmitry Volkostrelov, Russia).
Marģers Vanags is a promising young dancer. He has taken part in the large-scale multimedia dance production “Both Sides” (choreographer Liene Grava) and in the contemporary dance composition “Labra Nams” (choreography by collaborative art duo IevaKrish), as well as in productions “alfaSAPIENSI” (director Elmārs Seņkovs, choreographer Elīna Gediņa), “??????-atā” (choreographer Līga Ūbele), “Mom, I’m in Albania” (choreographer Olga Žitluhina).
