“The only evidence is inside my own mind, and I don’t know with any certainty that any other human being shares my memories.” (George Orwell, “1984”)

When Latvia became part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1940, the People's Commissariat of the Latvian SSR passed the law on the LSSR Central Literature Board. With this law the printing of all periodical literature was stopped and work began on making the list of forbidden books and on destroying library collections. The forbidden books were burned, chopped up like firewood, ground up into wastepaper. But people hid the forbidden books in places where nobody would think to look – in freezers, in attics, in blocks of butter, in the covers of other books, in pantry rooms, in piles of clothing, buried under ground. In the sensory theatre audio production “Book Mark” remembered stories and the literary works of the forbidden authors merge together to tell the tale of a family in the 1970s through the world of sound.

We recommend listening to the performance in the evening in a quiet, calm place that is not brightly lit. To fully enjoy the world of sounds created by the artists, you must use headphones or earphones (it is important to use them correctly, according to the markings on your device identifying the left and right ear)! Switch off your phone, get comfortable, close your eyes and allow yourself to be taken on a journey of sound.
