The Next Shift | Dance performances

The Next Shift | Dance performances

Theatre Ģertrūdes ielas teātris presents three works by young choreographers – Ģirts Dubults, Emīlija Berga and Gundega Rēdere – who all share an interest in using movement as a means to speak about topics relevant to them – growing up and exploring themselves and their limits. At the same time these performances reveal each artist's individual view of the language of dance and communication with the audience.
The three works are all performed on the same night and are part of “The Next Shift'' project which aims to further the development of theatre and to support a new generation of performing arts practitioners entering Latvian theatre. The project is a collaboration between Theatre Ģertrūdes ielas teātris, Dirty Deal Teatro, Rēzekne Theatre “Joriks'' and Valmiera Drama Theatre.

Project “The Next Shift” is financially supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation’s programme “KultūrElpa” and Goethe-Institut Riga.

FOR US

“It seems that there is no place where I could be seen as I truly am, for my body deceives our eyes. I don't feel like a man, I am not a woman. Gender is ambiguous. I feel alienated from the world. I want to be free.”
Gender is a social construct which creates social norms, the non-compliance with which confuses a large part of society. At the same time the body in itself is not a social construct, it is society that creates the sociopolitical meaning of the body. In the performance “For Us” choreographer Ģirts Dubults talks about the divide between the individual and society, between knowing oneself and fitting in. Observing oneself, accepting your movement and your breath creates harmony. Breath can be sensed kinesthetically and is free from gender.

INTERSPACE

The performance offers a look into a space where a transition from the old to the new is sought through movement and sound. Things often get jammed up in the interspace. Change is gradual and sometimes imperceptible.
