At the time when Ibsen writes “Hedda Gabler” a woman is expected to perform the role of a perfect wife, mother and homemaker. Hedda is not able to fit into this range. In the struggle between the imposed societal norms and her own thirst for freedom Hedda becomes a symbol for courageous emancipation, but also for obsession and manipulation. What is torturing Hedda?
